About the Author
Evangelos Simoudis is a recognized expert on big data strategies and corporate innovation. He has been working in Silicon Valley for 25 years as a venture investor, entrepreneur, and corporate executive. Evangelos is the co-founder and Managing Director of Synapse Partners, a venture firm that invests in early-stage startups developing big data applications, and an advisor to global corporations on big data strategies and Startup-Driven Innovation. He has also served as Managing Director at Trident Capital, and Partner at Apax Partners. In 2012 and 2014 he was named top investor in online advertising. Prior to his venture and advisory career Evangelos served as President and CEO of Customer Analytics, and as Vice President of Business Intelligence at IBM. Evangelos serves on advisory boards for the Center for Information Science and Technology at Caltech, the International School of Business at Brandeis University, the Center for Urban Science and Progress at New York University, and the Autonomous Vehicle Task Force of SAFE. He earned a PhD in computer science from Brandeis University and a BS in electrical engineering from Caltech.

If you are working in IT, IOT, Auto OEMs, or Tier 1s, this is a must read book. I spent months researching big data + connected cars. This filled in a lot of gaps in my knowledge. I seriously wished I'd had this book 6 months ago. It would have saved me many days of research. On the other hand, most of my research was confirmed and some nonsense discarded after reading this.The book is unique in that it correlates big data analytics with the myriad manufacturing aspects. There is a general expectation that the sensor data and infotainment data is more valuable than the car itself and this book explores that. He makes this easy to grasp too. No theory, lots of examples.Few autonomous car pundits understand big data analytics. Simoudis comes from that heritage but ran off to the more lucrative VC business. With several successful BI/analytic startups behind him, he reveals how connected car big data is being used and how that should evolve. Fortunately for us muggles, he doesn't devolve into eyelids-slamming-shut programming or esoteric math formulas.The book also reveals the deep connections Evangelos has into Silicon Valley cultures, companies, and current projects. I don't know anyone else with this much access to information on this topic -- not Gartner, not independents. Every OEM and Tier 1 should buy this book, especially the people who worry about the data.I highly suggest searching the web on the companies he recommends.You could pay $5,000 to the analyst houses for dramatically less useful information.This book is more than a bargain to anyone interested in these markets.
Dr. Simoudis offers an insightful perspective on the automotive industry, how it is changing, the forces in play, the new players, and the incumbents. He discusses the technological innovations behind the shift towards Autonomous Connected Electrified vehicles, the shift from car-ownership to car-access business models, and the disruption they have caused to long-standing businesses. Dr. Simoudis highlights the central role of big data and machine intelligence in these developments and makes a compelling case there is significant opportunity that is currently overlooked, particularly by the incumbents. Dr. Simoudis analyzes two key areas for capitalizing on the opportunity. First, how innovation happens; he calls for a startup-driven innovation strategy to ensure sufficient focus on over-the-horizon innovation and proposes a specific organizational structure -- the "Innovation Outpost" -- to implement it. Second, how value is generated from data, and the associated strategy, technology,architecture, governance, culture, and legal considerations. I found the book thought-provoking -- a powerful illustration of the positive impact that can be realized from cognitive technologies in customer-centric solutions. I highly recommended this book to business leaders,technology leaders, and entrepreneurs in the automotive industry, transportation services, and any other business that faces disruption from novel business models that capitalize on technical innovation around big data, connectivity, and machine intelligence in the cognitive era.
Simoudis does an excellent job of describing the forces at play in the move to Autonomous, Connected, Electric vehicles, and the strategic implications for incumbents, especially the major automobile manufacturers. He's particularly eloquent in the area he knows best: the role of strategic outposts and the role of startups in innovation by large, established companies.He argues that automobile manufacturers should commit themselves to big data and analytics. I agree, yet I see a slightly different set of implications and strategic questions. Buying his argument that mobility services will disrupt the auto industry, and granting the desire of incumbents to jump to the next wave, I believe they shouldn't try to offer mobility services, rather they should offer vehicles that fit into the emerging mobility-centered market. The airline and aircraft manufacturing industries are a useful analogy. I wouldn't expect Boeing and Airbus to enter the airline business. The auto manufacturers have a different set of strategic options to consider: (1) If mobility providers (Uber, Lyft) will have fleets of autonomous, electric cars, then the auto manufacturers should build cars suited to high utilization by fleets with the expectation that the vehicles will turn over in a few years due to high utilization. (2) How can cars be customized using 3D printing for different kinds of fleet applications? Is there an opportunity to personalize the autonomous vehicle that shows up for you? (3) Software markets are global and tend to winner takes all. How will the consolidation of manufacturers play out?
