As always, another interesting book about Ell and the family. Although some people may call the characters too perfect, I think of them as refreshing. You really don't encounter books as light and enjoyable as the Ell Donsaii series very often, so I have a tendency to re-read the series before each release. So far I haven't had any decrease in enjoyment in either the new books or previous ones. It is fun to see how the world and characters develop along with the science and technology being invented around them. I would definitely recommend the series for someone who doesn't want a book that is too heavy, but a nice and fun read.
It used to bug me to no end to have multiple perspectives share this series with one of my favorit-ist of female characters. I think this may be the first time I’ve truly appreciated all the different character perspectives. Ell’s minimized voice is barely missed now that other characters have lives and view points that are also interesting. I so enjoyed the dynamics of Ell and Zage’s verbal engagements. The reminder that Zage is still a child is most delineated when he’s dealing with his mother. The two kept me smiling and laughing.I enjoyed Ell’s Super Woman and Get-Her-Done focus in all the prior books. I literally loved it SO much, I rededicated my work focus with Ell’s mindset. It opened a wealth of opportunities for me—even at my age. But I found I enjoyed Ell more as SuperWoman_Mom-Is-The-Bomb.COM, LLC. She’s certainly become more every-day-human with Zage’s birth and independence. Sigh. I’m not a mother, but I love how Ell’s motherhood and relationship with her son is being developed.Anyway, this book is still about Ell’s over-the-top accomplishments (though more subdued). Even better, the book balances the accomplishments of a variety of characters—not just the Kinrais family’s. I guess this means we’ll be seeing more classy, versus brassy, glorification of girl power. I’m not hating that. In fact, as long as the Ell Donsaii character survives, I will be loving this series.
Although this story really is mostly mundane in action, and Ell is almost a minor character, and the author actually has to remind us of all the action Ell has been in, the story does not drag. The bioscience is, in many ways more spectacular than was the physical science of earlier stories. Zage's character gets a real boost in realization and believability. The only part I have been unhappy about is that Dahners' stories are so widely spaced. The waiting for a new one is tough. One kind of quiet plus is that the editing is really good. I didn't spot a single typo or grammar fault. Possibly, because the story flowed so well, but this book was easily as polished as most hard-bound fiction. Also, in spite of the relatively wide-out-there science concepts, everything is very well crafted. Author does his arithmetic, and has otherwise done his homework to really link cutting edge knowledge of today with the capabilities of his characters and prior developments. Everything makes sense, and the possibilities for control of both alcoholism and Alzheimer's is actually exciting. This from a hard line physical chemist who never took a biology course. Here's hoping for more soon from this author, both more from Ell, and more of his other story lines!!
I would tell you to buy and read this book immediately but it would wrong. If you have read ANY of the other books in this(or any other of Dr. Dahners series ) then you are likely already hooked and will read it regardless. You could read it as the first book by this author but then you would be cheating yourself out of the wonderful progression leading to this point. So, I will simply advise you to go immediately to Amazon and purchase the first book of this series. Once you read it and become as addicted as the rest of us, Enjoy binge reading this series and the just as wonderful other series by this author and welcome to the club. (Ps: sorry about what I just did to your book buying budget.
I read a great deal, and I’m always on the lookout for originality. The SF and fantasy genres have become overrun with “trend followers:†writers who seem to believe that the road to success involves writing about “what’s hot.†So whatever seems to be popular elicits a lot of imitators, especially in its major motifs: e.g., post-apocalyptic fiction, space-war stories, vampires, werewolves, zombies, and the like. But rather than greasing the path to popularity, the trends more often make a writer’s stuff seem formulaic, a sort of Harlequin approach to SF or fantasy. The Ell Donsaii stories stay out of those grooves. The major characters are originals, as are the things they do and the pitfalls that bedevil them. The individual stories are worthy – they must be, as I read all 15 novels in the space of four days – despite the continuity and consistency required of a series that focuses principally on the undertakings and derring-do of its superwoman heroine. Granted that the concept of a supergenius heroine who’s also the world’s greatest athlete – not in one but in all sports! – and is also as good and generous a person as Ell Donsaii is a bit farfetched, but hey, this is fiction. Science fiction, at that. From the above, you might be wondering “Why only four stars? That’s almost a condemnation. Books that should be used to fill the bottoms of cat litter pans average four stars at Amazon!†Well, though I enjoyed the books, they do have some problems that dampened that enjoyment.Dahners needs stylistic help. He indulges in a lot of low-level practices that can jar the reader out of his narrative: some because they fall into patterns that are just too noticeable; others because they violate patterns that he should take care to preserve. I note that he has a lot of books out, which is admirable. Perhaps the Ell Donsaii series isn’t stylistically up to the standards of the others; I’ll be delving into some of the others to check.Along with that, Dahners has apparently set out to exhaust the world’s supply of apostrophes! Contractions are everywhere in these books. A great many of them are unwise for one or more reasons. His seeming jihad against the innocent, useful word “had†must be motivated by an animus of a completely new kind; at least, I’ve never observed such a thing before. Either that, or he has a secret stash of apostrophes hidden away and is looking to corner the market. Research continues. So: four stars, with possibilities for improvement. And that’s **not** a condemnation, but rather an appreciation of entertainment that really does entertain, but that could be done somewhat better.
