I am a tremendous fan of the writing of Lucy Chronic and her mother Halka Chronic. I have her mother's Pages of Stone 3: The Desert Southwest and Roadside Geology of New Mexico. Informative. Understandable. Highly recommended for those looking to know more about how our landscape got this way. This volume concerns the Grand Canyon, Colorado Plateau, and associated parks. It is excellent.

Another excellent book bt a well known earth science author. A great book on the geology of the Grand Canyon and Colorado Plateau written for the non-geologist.

Great summary for many of the National Parks in Utah and Arizona which we visited in the autumn of 2014. The book provides insight into the earth science forces which shaped this fascinating terrain over the last 2 billion years. Do note that it is important to read the introductory material in order to understand the the geologic terminology.

I love this book. I purchased it for a geology field trip course (7 days where we saw features in California, Utah, Arizona and Nevada). The book outlined many of the geological featutes I'd seen and gives great information on history, conditions etc.

'Pages of Stone' was in excellent condition upon receiving it. Looked new! Definitely order from the same place again. This book was most helpful as we are 'rockhounds' and our excurions are even more interesting now with using this book. It's one of our 'mainstays' that we take along on our outings. This book would also be good for anyone taking a trip out west to help understand some of the amazing scenery along the way.

Halka Chronic's "Pages of Stone" is a well-written introduction to the geology of the Colorado Plateau. Her book, following a general introduction to the geological formation processes of the plateau landscapes, is organized around the numerous national parks and monuments in this remarkable area. These include the biggies, like the Grand Canyon, Bryce, and Mesa Verde, as well as lesser known locations like Sunset Crater, the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, and Wupatki. Each park and monument is treated with a detailed description of its principal geological features, how these features fit into the overall geology of the plateau, and is illustrated with black and white photographs (there are a number of color photos in a center insert). I have only one complaint about Chronic's book, but it was enough to knock off a star from what could be a five-star volume. That's the lack of detailed park maps that would make it easier to locate some the places that she discusses. I have an earlier edition of this book, so if this has been corrected in this latest edition, then simply add a star to my review. All in all, this book, and Chronic's Roadside Geology series, are a good way for the layperson to familiarize themselves with one of the truely great American regions.
