London (The Secret Lover, etc.) returns to her historical romance roots with this sprightly Regency. Determined to save his family's estate, Scottish Captain Liam Lockhart of the Royal Highland Regiment journeys to London to locate the jeweled statue that was misappropriated by the English Lockhart cousins almost 400 years earlier. Upon finding rooms at the home of stodgy Lord Farnsworth, Liam makes the acquaintance of Farnsworth's daughter, Ellen, and her nine-year-old child, Natalie. Ellen and Liam begin a friendship that deftly progresses to romance, but Liam's occupation as a soldier leaves little hope for the lovers' future. Marriage looks even more unlikely when Ellen steals the statue for her own purposes, leading Liam on a fast, frenzied chase across the country. London departs from the seriousness of her earlier historicals and instead offers a lighthearted tale full of comic encounters and entertaining verbal (and physical) battles. With its spry, sympathetic characters and skillfully woven plot, this vibrant tapestry holds a lot of promise not only for future installments in the Lockhart family saga, but for this gifted and versatile author. To save his family's estate, Captain Liam Lockhart leaves Scotland for London to retrieve the only thing of value his clan ever possessed: an ugly gold and ruby statue known as the "beastie." Commissioned centuries ago by the doomed lover of the first Lady Lockhart, the supposedly cursed statue wound up in London when political machinations split the Lockharts into English and Scottish branches. Liam tries to ingratiate himself to his English cousins but finds it difficult to stay focused once he meets Ellen, his landlord's daughter. Bewitched by her loveliness, angered by her sad fate, and charmed by her imaginative young daughter, Natalie, Liam finds himself forced to choose between finding the statue or rescuing Ellen. London begins an entrancing new trilogy with this exquisitely romantic, lusciously sensual historical regency. Finely crafted characters and polished writing rich with the author's deliciously tart humor are just a few of the delights awaiting readers in this superb love story. I love highlanders to begin with, and Julia London is one of my favorite authors. That said, I really enjoyed reading this book. I loved the way Liam went on a mission only to be "outdone" and by a female, not once but couple times!! I don't know if the others were reading the same book as I was, but I really enjoyed and have recommended it to several people I know. I also hate doing rviews because I am always scared I will give away something and I know for myself I don't like that, unless it is someone who knows me and wants me to read the book and then and only then will they tell me something to get interested in the book.I loved the fact that Liam kept to his highlander ways. The only time he had to dress differnetly was while on his mission, but then every one does that. Ellen, i loved her character!! So she made one mistake, who hasn't, but the way she was treated got me upset, I mean isn't family suppose to stand by you when something happens? But I also understand this was the way in those days. All I can say is if you want a book to enjoy, get this book and all of Julia's books!!!
Having to slowly sell everything they own in order to keep from losing their family estate, the Lockharts have resorted to everything from loans to searching for work but can not stay afloat. Although a ridiculous idea, Aila (mother/wife) suggests they search for something that would be more than enough to pay back debts and relieve them of their financial burden, and it IS rightfully theirs to begin with, the Lockhart beastie. Unfortunately, all they know is that it may be in London with their cousins, the English Lockharts'. Out of the five family members, Carson and Aila, their three children Liam, Griff, and Mared, Liam offers to go to London since he is well trained in the field of deception, tracking, and to handle himself should something go wrong. Once arriving in London one of his first orders of business is to find lodging, he then rents a room from Mr. Farnsworth who was very reluctant to rent to him since he is a Scot. After that Liam sets out to acquaintance himself with his cousin Nigel Lockhart so that he may gain their trust and eventually find the beastie and take it. Within the first couple of days Liam suspects someone is going through his belongings in his room, and in an attempt to catch and interrogate whoever it is, he lays a trap and waits. Much to his surprise what he 'catches' is a little girl named Natalie who goes into his room to bounce on his bed. From there he's hooked, not really by his choice but Natalie goes to see him every chance she gets, and once he finally meets her mother Ellen, he falls hopelessly in love (more or less). Due to his many years as a soldier and now a Captain, Liam has the scars of war, which he believes makes him ugly and unwanted. However, Ellen doesn't seem to care about that as she fall's in love with him for who he is. Knowing that he has to eventually leave for Scotland and for desperation to save her daughter, Ellen steals the beastie from him (the way she does it is very funny) and runs to her friend's house where she believes she can't be found. She underestimated him. He eventually returns to Scotland empty handed, since she tricked him not only once but twice, however he has something very special waiting for him there. It is truly a very good book and sets the stage for the books that follow. London does a very good job of creating her characters and absorbing you into the book. The sex scenes are more frequent in this book than the next, as well as the 'type' of sex they share is much different as well. However, it does not have A LOT of sex episodes as some other books do, do if you are looking for that kind of thing I would not recommend this to you. But if you are a fan of the Highlander theme (or not since I really wasn't at first) and enjoy a good romance story then I would suggest you read this book. London also does an excellent job writing in Gaelic, as well as her use of settings, people, and things used in her book fits the time period that she is placing them in.
An excellent storyline riddled with twists and turns to confuse even the sharpest mind. Liam used all his military experience to find the beastie only to have Ellie steal it away. Both needed it to secure the future of those they loved. The saying went that it would only slip through the fingers of the Scots.
This is my second time reading Highlander Unbound and it was the charm for me. When I first read this book a long while back, I was not familiar with the historical ways & dialogues from both the Scottish and English cultures. I am now a bit more wise in that area and can appreciate the dialogue and wit that comes with. Quirky & fun, Highlander Unbound was a quick read (hours) that has me looking forward to the next book. I am ashamed to say I was unfamiliar with Ms. London's work back then & did not know this was part of a series. I now know better! ;)
As a HUGE fan of both historical romance and Julia London, I have to admit that I loved Highlander Unbound. The plot is intriguing enough to keep you reading, light enough to make you smile and sultry enough to make you want more. As usual, Julia's characters truly shine and Liam and Ellie are no exception to that rule. Their love/romance is unorthodox, unexpected and enjoyable. The plot of Highlander Unbound is fast paced, light and enjoyable but obviously created to lead into the next book in Julia's series, Highlander In Disguise. That being said, Highlander Unbound definitely ends at a point that leaves the reader with many unanswered questions. Which, depending on your point of view, is not necessarily a bad thing. Overall, I definitely enjoyed Highlander Unbound, it was a wonderful read. As a die hard Julia London fan, I couldn't be more pleased.
I thoroughly enjoyed Highlander Unbound from the prologue to the ending. This was my second read for this book and I really liked it just as much this time around.I loved the lore of the Beastie and the banter and attraction between Liam and Ellie is nearly as great as their spicy love scenes. This books leaves me wanting to pick up the next one in the series, Highlander in Disguise. If you haven't checked out this great series yet, please don't hesitate. Hopefully you'll fall in love with the Lockhart's and look forward to the next book as much as I am...Even for the second time :)
Excellent reading. Such a great book . All the books about this family are captivating Highlander stories!
Slow to begin, I actually was able to put the book down, NOT usual for me, or with her books. Not her best, but a good read despite that. Julia London is a very good writer, and I enjoy her books, which is why this one confounded me. Very slow to take off, I'm glad I held on. Worth it at the end.
