If you buy art books to look at the pictures (and that's me), this is a book for you. There are about 15 pages of commentary, 15 pages of interview, and then 200 pages of high-quality color plates (with most of the art full-page). One interesting choice made by the author: artworks from very different periods of the artist's career are interwoven, rather than presented chronologically. (The author's stated purpose is to show how all of Steir's paintings share a common theme.) In any case, each piece has the date, title, and size at the bottom of the page and there is a nice visual flow from page to page, so I find the presentation very pleasing. An excellent addition to my contemporary art book collection.
if you thought you were getting a 200 page hardbound text you'd be wrong. this is a 44 page gallery pamphlet.
The format of the book - interspersing paintings of all periods instead of presenting them chronologically - is not to my taste. That said, the juxtapositions are informative and though-provoking and the quality of the reproductions is excellent.
Delighted to be able to source this book, despite it being rather marked it is a wonderful reference book of work I had not seen before
The book that arrived with the cover shown in the photo is not for the retrospective of Steir's work, as the reviews shown imply. I thought I was ordering the retrospective, but what was actually delivered is a much shorter work, actually a 2014 exhibition catalogue from New York. Published by Cheim and Read, it contains an unbelievably arch and pretentious introductory 'Essay for Two Voices' by Raphael Rubinstein. There are 19 good reproductions of works on canvas for the exhibition, a couple of work-in-progress shots and 18 tiny reproductions of large canvases. There is the usual artist's resume at the back.Amazon, please correct this web page!
I got this book for my mom at Christmas. Everything was in pristine condition and she loved the gift.Her only regret is that she can't paint waterfalls like Steir can.
