I don’t often read true crime stories. I’m a criminal lawyer with more than two decades of experience. I usually try to avoid any books or shows about the criminal justice system. I get my fill through my job and would prefer to escape from it all in my free time. Still, I wanted to read this book because the events interspersed with my own life. I worked in two counties that border western Kauffman County (Navarro and Ellis). And I know several of the lawyers involved. I remember the profound effect that Mr. Hasse’s murder had on my legal community. I can recall the fear and buzz that consumed our courthouse, especially after the other two murders. Although we had all considered that such events could happen, it had never actually happened before. Family law cases tend to be the ones that attract people that are out for revenge against an attorney. My impression has always been that most people get that prosecutors, law enforcement, and even defense attorneys are just doing their job. Even when defending a killer, jurors and victims families have never made any threats to me. And the reality of these murders happening so close to home made it all the more shocking. I’ve witnessed first hand, on many occasions, the extra effort that comes from law enforcement when one of their own is a victim. It’s a full court press with very very powerful forces. Think of any major crime where law enforcement has been the victim. It’s on. So, the fact that the killers were not captured relatively quickly and were able to strike again was unfathomable.Beyond my personal experience, this book was extremely well written. The author did an excellent job at trying to be objective and telling all sides of the facts. It was well paced, well researched, and spot on with regard to the culture surrounding rural counties:the Texas criminal justice system. I’ve never read anything more accurate. For someone interested in true crime books, I can’t recommend this book enough.
I went into this wondering how in the world did her husband talk her into helping him commit murder. That question and many others were answered here in great detail. This is a very well written, very well researched book. The writing was such that I felt like I was right there in the middle of it, and I have never been to Texas, lol. This is the story of a man with a high intellenge, he's very manipulative and capable of planning things out to the smallest detail. The main problem is that he also has a huge ego, thinking that he is able to do what he wants when he wants and no one should ever say a word about it. He totally misused his powers as a judge, as a lawyer, even as a police officer. He seemed amused that the DA thought they could prosecute him and get a conviction, then he was all upset when he was found guilty, how dare they?? All in all this is a great book, don't judge a book by the poorly written reviews of someone like me who can't put words together like Kathryn Casey, she's the best at what she does.
A writer who is rivaling the great Ann Rule for top honors in TC. This book is without question one of the best true crime books in recent years. No repeat information and there are some big twists and turns. I couldn't put it down. I just wish that there another book this good to pick up, but it ain't so.Guess I'll have to wait....If you have even thought about getting revenge for being slighted, read this book. It may change your mind
I have read all of Kathryn Casey's books. She is an incredible writer. I heard about this case a few years ago (Dateline?, 48 Hours?) and I thought it was interesting back then. This book, however, illuminates the whole story in a way that was never possible on television . I agree with the major consensus that it was way over the top to prosecute Eric Williams for the theft of the computer monitors. Obviously that fact was quite a good reason to have a burning anger towards the prosecutors. What is not understandable is why he thought it was within his right to kill anyone. And I will never understand it.
Another great book by Casey! I remember when the events happened but Kathryn Casey does such in-depth research that she is able to fill in all of the blanks. You’ll become familiar enough with Williams that his actions won’t surprise you, but you’ll walk away shaking your head at the ways this outcome might have been avoided. I recommend this book, and any book by Casey. I’ve read them all and can’t wait to pre-order the next one!
This a really good true crime book.Casey is the best true crime writer I've found since Ann Rule. She tells the story of two prosecuters murdered and gives the back story of why and who ki!led them. It is an excellent book a and one which any true crime fan will appreciate
This story is very well written. Personally knowing some of the main characters, their personalities are perfectly depicted here. The description of Kaufman County and the shockwaves that reverberated throughout the communities, reading this book, brought all those feelings of surprise and disbelief back, again. Everyone has a trigger, everyone has a tipping point but is there ever a justification for murder? This is a true story of how hate and the driving force of wanting to destroy a life can eventually destroy everything. Kathryn Casey tells this true story from the different perspectives of the people involved. I am impressed with the honest way she has told this story, no flourishes or exaggerations here, just a true to the point storyteller. Good job on such a sad story.
I thought I knew everything about this case from the media coverage over the past several years. I was wrong. If you are familiar with this case, it is a must read. If you arent, even better. Meticulously researched and wonderfully written, Casey provides the definitive account of an unprecedented wave of fear and revenge. I literally didn't put it down.
