This is brilliant, original, inspiring. But more important, it's chockablock loaded with useful, well presented suggestions. Doesn't get bogged down in explicative text either. Just flows. I write as someone who's been shooting, processing and post processing film and digital images for many decades. My standards are pretty high. This one is worth every penny and every minute of time. Kudos.

John Neel’s “FOCUS in Photography” takes one of the basic principles of making good pictures and goes way beyond what you thought you know. This terrific book takes you on a journey into some very technical subjects (don’t be fooled by the simple sounding title), but presents it in a way that anyone looking to make better photographs can understand. As a photographer for more than 40 years, I thought I knew how focus can be used creatively, but “FOCUS in Photography” has opened up new digital techniques I had no idea where possible. Get this book if you want to broaden your creative skills!

I thought this book was great. It covered some topics I knew, but hadn't really thought about in awhile. Focusing basics, circle of confusion, basic bokeh. And it introduced new topics that got me really excited, like stacking... I have been a bit lazy lately , using auto focus too much , blaming my eyes... But now I am inspired to take more control over my images. I thought it was worth buying a copy for my Niece, she's just started tinkering with lenses.

I felt this book read like a dictionary. It went in depth to the different kinds of bokeh & how light works with the sensor to capture the photograph. I felt this was more for a beginner or someone wanting to know all the official names of bokeh styles.

“Focus in Photography, Master the Fundamental Photographic Method, Open a New World of Creativity” is a beautifully produced coffee table-style book, although not as big as a typical coffee table book.Author John Neel reviews using focusing techniques in new and creative ways in the introduction of the book. The content then quickly shifts into more of a traditional book about digital photography, with less “focus” on focus and more about such topics as the importance of light, different types of bokeh, lenses, close-up photography, focus stacking, shooting panoramas, and post production software.This book is not aimed at a novice photographer; it is meant, I think, more for the advanced amateur. “Focus in Photography” contains beautiful photographs, as well as a number of colorful and detailed charts, graphics, and illustrations that explain such things like how a tilt-shift lens works, using extension tubes, reversing lenses, using focus rails, and using a two-lens macro technique for close-up photography, focus stacking (to get those real good macro photos), and other topics.The final chapter of the book covers aspects of how post production software that can be used to achieve different results. While not exhaustive reviews of the software, or a step-by-step guide about how to use the software, the information is interesting.You don’t have to necessarily start at the beginning of the book at read it through the way it is presenting, although the first chapter, on light, is correctly placed since light, and how a lens (and camera) see light, is the most important element of photography.Overall I am enjoying reading “Focus in Photography,” and I enjoy just picking it up and reading a chapter. The book was not necessarily written for someone looking for instruction about how to get out of “Auto” or “P” mode, but for experienced photographers who are looking to take their skills to the next level.

I’ve been taking photos as a hobbyist for over 30 years starting with film and have been self taught through books. John Neel entered the world of photography through digital and worked for Eastman Kodak where he researched old film photography techniques to see what may be able to be developed for the digital photography world. He stated he enjoyed this so much that he continued learning for his own curiosity.Neel understands thoroughly the mechanics of the camera and the lenses and he is able to explain these in simple terms so that even a beginner can understand why and how a visual effect occurs, whether it is a desired affect or a problem. He is a clear communicator and I was able to understand his explanations. He keeps brief and the Y is explained in a way that is not boring. In this book the different types of cameras and their abilities are explained as well as the use of different lenses and adaptations you can do by using accessories or DIY handmade alterations. Some of the best solutions to do some of the coolest affects though art expensive equipment purchases. I found myself looking at prices online while I was reading the book And some of these fun options are beyond my budget.After going through all the equipment and how you can make these digital images your self, he addresses five different photo editing software programs And explains what bokeh effects are possible with each and exactly what to do to obtain the effect.Throughout the book there are always discussions of pros and cons or strengths and weaknesses of doing things one way or the other. The book is filled with full color photographs on every page which are inspiring and beautiful. There are also really great diagrams to explain things which make a lot more sense than just reading text, such as on pages 86–87 the three explanations of using a tilt shift camera versus a normal Camera to try and shoot a tall building without giving the appearance of it leaning while also capturing the full height of the structure in the frame.I learned a lot by reading this book because Neel explains the how and why — so many other photo books just tell you what to do. I’m the type of learner that likes to know the why, and once I understand that I actually can learn and remember the how. Even if you are more experienced than me and already own expensive cameras, lenses and have done a lot more photo editing then I have you probably will learn something because Neil has used all of this top equipment and experimented and shares what he has learned here. You may get a shortcut or tip they could save you money or time by considering his advice and experience. Rating 5 stars =Love It.
