Overall I liked the book. It had a lot of potential for a really great story. Gave it 4 stars as a light, clean, suitable for anyone book. Even though it was realistic in it's portrayal of how a person would feel having a disfigurement, I got tired of hearing his self dialogue. Also needed a bit more excitement to it. But if you're looking for something to escape into for a while, this is it.
A conniving aunt, a broken man and a destitute young lady come together in this sweet Regency romance. Although this is a quick read, it nevertheless leaves one with a warm-hearted feeling as it speaks of the healing power of love and acceptance. One normally attributes vanity to women, but we forget that men's egos are very fragile and that bad scarring can make any person self-conscious. In a beauty-driven world, one that didn't have the benefits of plastic surgery, one can understand Nathaniel's reluctance to go about in society, but that was before Aunt Ariadne put her schemes into place. Nathaniel is a gentle person and once he gets over his initial consternation at his aunt's arrival with an unexpected companion, he becomes the romantic hero that we expect in Ms Darcy's novels. Jane is like most young women of her age, hesitant and somewhat shy at being placed in an awkward situation. She too begins to understand that once she gets used to Nathaniel's scars, she sees a person she likes rather than his disfigurement. The story is well-written, clean and romantic. Despite being short it is a standalone and comes to a happy closure. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
The Beast and the Baron's Daughter by Charlotte Darcy is another in the endearing Regency Fairy Tales series. This is obviously Beauty and the Beast. Jane is a ladies' companion working for Lady Ariadne Milford. Her father had been a baron, but left Jane alone and penniless. As such she is to travel with Lady Ariadne to visit her lady's nephew, Nathaniel Alexander, the Earl of Sotheby. The Earl has pretty much walled himself up in his home, eschewing society to that of the solitary life. Lady Ariadne believes it a mistake and is out to repair the damage.Nathaniel is a handsome young man who has turned bitter because of burns on one side of his face and body. Because people can be rude he has never given them time to adjust to his appearance. He is totally uncomfortable with inviting people to his home but it is impossible to fight his aunt. He does notice that he is becoming more comfortable around both his aunt and Jane whish causes him to loosen up a bit. He is a good man, which Jane notices, as well. Rich characters; good story. I enjoyed it and recommend it to readers of this genre.I was given a free ARC of the Beast and the Baron's Daughter in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This is a beauty and the beast story with Jane losing her father and she is left with only a title and no money to support herself so she takes a job as a companion to Lady Ariadne. Nathaniel who is the Earl of Sotheby was scared in the war and now he is a recluse and doesn't want anyone to see his scars but Lady Ariadne is not having it so she hatches a plan to get Jane and Nathaniel together. Enjoyable story and characters.Received from the author and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.
A sweet Regency styled romance. She is forced to work as a companion, He suffers the scars of war.Can they find a happy ever after?I received an Advance Reader copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review
This is a nice book ... familiar themes, romance, and characters who grow and develop over time. The author has written a sweet and compelling story. I noted no typos or grammatical errors ... an absolute plus for the book. I enjoy this author’s books and it is clear that she takes pride in her craft as well as the final product!
This is a sweet tale in fact a tale as old as time and a retelling of Beauty and the Beast. I enjoyed this book and it was a delightful read. I enjoyed reading it one evening and can highly recommend it.I received a review copy of this book from the author/publisher; all opinions in my review are my own.
Charlotte Darcy has written a delightful sweet and clean story of a young girl and a battle scarred young man with a determined Aunt who wants her nephew to come out of his hiding.
